Pediatric Physical Therapy Home Care and Tips
Tummy Time is known as the time a baby spends on his/her stomach (tummy). Yes, it is recommended for babies to sleep on their back, but tummy time should be set aside for when they are awake and yes your baby should sleep on their back to reduce the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Tummy time should begin as early as the first day baby comes home from the hospital.A main reason that tummy time is important is that babies can develop flat heads from sleeping on their backs, which is a condition known as Positional Plagiocephaly. The way to prevent this temporary condition is to have your baby on his/her tummy while awake.
Most parents notices that their baby does not like tummy time which should span about 10 to 20 minutes. Here are some methods to ease tummy time for the baby:
- Initiate it with shorter spans such as 2/3 minutes per day.
- Lay on your back with your baby’s tummy on the chest.
- Provide your baby with a toy to play with.
- Use a pillow to prop his/her chest.
- Sing to your baby during tummy time.
